This is the 33rd largest state, with a land area of 46,055 square miles (119,283 km2) and has the 6th largest population in the country. At 12.4 million people, Pennsylvania is the 9th most densely populated state in the US.
The largest city is Philadelphia, which is known as “The City of Brotherly Love”. This city was the most important in the early days of the United States and actually served as the first capital. In the 18th century it was more important than New York, but has now been overtaken in size and population to become the 5th largest city in the country.
The climate here is dictated by the Allegheny Mountains running through the center of the state. South of the mountains experiences a humid continental climate, but closer to the mountains the temperatures decrease, and snowfall becomes greater. Near Lake Erie, some parts of the state can get over 100 inches of snowfall a year.
Pennsylvania was just the second state to agree to the US Constitution, signing on December 12, 1787 which was just 5 days after the first state, Delaware.
Pennsylvania has had several nicknames over its long history. It was known officially as the ‘Quaker Province’ in colonial times and has had the nickname “Quaker State”. It has also been called “Keystone State” since 1802 because of its importance is establishing the Constitution as well as its economic importance. The state motto is “Virtue, Liberty and Independence”.
