Michigan is a large state, ranked 11th in terms of land area at 97,790 square miles (253,266 km2) and 8th in population size, with over 10 million people.
The state was named after Lake Michigan. The lake's name comes from a French adaptation of the Ojibwe term ‘mishigami’, meaning ‘large lake’.
The state can suffer heavy lake-effect snow from late fall through the middle of February. The Upper Peninsula has a more severe climate than the rest of the state with cold, to very cold winters with shorter, warm and humid summers. In the Lower Peninsula, particularly at the southern end, summers are hot and humid and winters are cold. This area has an average of 17 tornadoes per year.
Michigan has many nicknames, including “The Wolverine State”. The Wolverine is also the state’s official Animal. Other nicknames include “The Great Lakes State” and “The Mitten State”.
This was the 26th state to join the Union, doing so on January 26, 1837.
